What is a Chromebook?

A Chromebook is a laptop that runs Google's Chrome operating system. It is designed to be used mostly to go online, and has less processing power than a traditional laptop.

Why Chromebooks?

Chromebooks are a good choice for students because of their limitations. Because users run apps through the web rather than downloading programs, there are fewer chances for things to go wrong. Chromebooks can't get viruses. If a student's Chromebook is damaged or glitchy, the student just has to sign in on another and all their settings and content will be synced over automatically. Chromebooks are also very fast to boot up, so there is little time wasted.

1:1 Chromebook Initiative

Since 2015/2016, all middle and high school students in the Sheboygan Area School District have been supplied with a Chromebook device. This device is the property of the SASD. The Chromebook will allow students access to Google Apps for Education, educational web-based tools, and many other useful websites. The school-provided Chromebook is an educational tool that is not intended for gaming or social networking.

The mission of the 1:1 Chromebook Initiative is to create a collaborative learning environment for all students. This environment supports engagement with content and promotes self-directed exploration and inquiry among students. Students will shift from being merely consumers of information to also becoming creators of content and insights.

Google Apps for Education is a suite of productivity tools that are used by teachers and students. Google Apps allow for easy collaboration and sharing, which is ideal for group projects and facilitating teacher feedback on work. They also have simple interfaces and user-friendly features like automatic saving, which means they are easy for students to pick up and use without extensive instruction. Google Apps used by the district include Drive (cloud storage for files), Docs, Slides, Drawings, Forms, Sites, Calendar, and Mail.

Benefits:

Students have easy access to online educational resources
Moving away from paper-based classrooms will prepare students for the central place of technology in many occupations
Students will learn to use electronic research and productivity tools in increasingly sophisticated ways
Providing a device for every student is a move towards equity of opportunity for all

Behavior Matrix for Chromebook Use

Be Respectful

Use cameras/video tools appropriately and only with the permission of the teacher and those you are filming.
Keep volume to an appropriate level (off unless needed).
Downloads and content must follow all SASD & Farnsworth policies (nothing too violent, sexual, vulgar, etc.).
Accept that some content is not allowed. Do not try to circumvent blocks.
Communicate respectfully (follow email etiquette; avoid foul language; don’t insult, threaten, or bully).
Cooperate immediately when adults ask to see your Chromebook.

Be Responsible

Your Chromebook must be clearly marked with a name tag and barcode. Do not otherwise mark or attach stickers to your device.
Bring your fully-charged Chromebook to school every day, and leave your charger at home.
Treat your Chromebook gently and keep it in good condition.
Protect your Chromebook from exposure to liquid, food, weather, etc.
Keep your Chromebook clean with a soft, dry cloth.
Keep your Chromebook with you or in a designated safe place.
Report damaged, lost, or found Chromebooks to the library immediately.
You are the only one allowed to use your Chromebook at school.

Be Safe

Be careful what you share—keep passwords and personal information private.
Follow all SASD and Farnsworth policies.
Report abusive or questionable messages or subject matter to a teacher.

Be Productive

Close your Chromebook and put it aside when directed by staff.
Play music and games only when a teacher gives permission.
Keep teacher apps/extensions installed.
Your Chromebook is for education. Social media is not allowed.
