Academics are our core mission, but school is more than just classes. At Farnsworth, we offer students numerous co-curricular activities. These give students a chance to get involved, pursue personal interests, participate in team sports, or apply their academic skills in new ways.
In Archery we teach how to shoot safely. Our focus is on the fundamentals of the sport. We welcome students with little or no experience! Safety is the number one concern in this activity. Different shooting games will be played after a higher level of shooting skill is achieved.
Use your creativity and artistic talent to help beautify the world. Open to all students with a strong interest in art and a willingness to use their creativity and artistic talent to enhance and beautify the halls and rooms of Farnsworth. Students will work as a team to create two- and three-dimensional artwork for display throughout the school. Activities may include paintings, wall murals, sculptures, and banners.
It may be called BADminton, but you'll have a GOOD time playing! Students will learn the rules of Badminton and play the game. Our focus is on safety and gameplay.
Train in our fitness center after school. This is a great opportunity to learn how to safely use fitness equipment and get some exercise with friends. Build strength and fitness!
Students learn the rules of floor hockey and play the game. Our focus is on game play, strategy, and safety.
Gamecraft is a 2-pronged club. We offer casual games in the main library, and an ongoing RPG in the back room.
Anyone is welcome to drop in and play the casual games. These include things like chess, Uno, Jenga, Sorry, Guess Who, and Wavelength.
The RPG is for a core group willing to commit to multiple sessions, since it takes time to create a character, learn the rules, and keep track of the ongoing campaign. New players are welcome until the game is full, but will need to talk to Ms. Staron outside club time to create a character before beginning.
The Horticulture Club teaches the life skills of growing and caring for plants. Students tend plants throughout their growing process, from seed to fruit. At the end of each year, the club holds an annual plant sale, which is open to both the school community and the public. Proceeds from the sale are used to sustain the club for the future.
Jazz Band meets once a week after school and works on jazz-style music to perform at several concerts throughout the year. We are fortunate to have several very qualified jazz musicians who come in and help out with our ensemble throughout the year. Jazz is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who play a jazz instrument.
If you like math and enjoy challenging yourself with math problems then the Lakeland University Math competition is just for you! This event is a great opportunity to make new friends and enjoy a night competing with students from other middle schools in the area.
Math can be fun! Join us to challenge yourself, enjoy yourself, and team up with others who enjoy working and playing with numbers.
Panther Strings is an after-school group that plays popular music including songs heard on the radio or in musicals and movies. Panther Strings is open to students in grades 6-8.
The Science Fair is open to all students. Students may work individually or in small groups to design and carry out a science experiment. The design and results of the experiment will be shared with judges on the day of the Science Fair.
Come play the world's most popular sport! Play soccer, be a part of a team, make friends and have fun.
Speedball is a game that combines elements of soccer, football, and basketball. It is a very fast-paced game with many different ways of scoring. We will play speedball outside on the soccer field after school when the weather is good. If the weather is bad we may not play that day.
Student Council is a service organization. Students work together to run events within the building (such as Activity Nights), fundraise for various causes, and work toward building a great school environment.
The Farnsworth Middle School Student Council is composed of a general assembly, the Executive Board, and advisors. We help our members develop leadership skills and an understanding of government through projects and activities that benefit the school as well as the community. Each year we expand and improve our activities for the school and the community.
Our Executive Board is composed of 7th and 8th grade students. It comprises four officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer) and several Board Members. The officers are elected by the student body and the board members are appointed.
Have a talent you would like to share? Now is your chance! To enroll, you must try out. Those selected will have the opportunity to perform at student and family shows.
After students demonstrate their talents at try-outs, 12-15 acts are selected for the hour-long show. Rehearsals take place in the gym, cafeteria, or advisor's classroom depending on the nature of the act. The family show is held the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break, while the student show is that Wednesday. We try to book the South High auditorium for both, but it is also possible the shows will be held at Farnsworth.
Spring volleyball at Farnsworth is a separate activity from our Interscholastic Athletics Girls' Volleyball team. In this group, you'll play volleyball with other students of all genders right here at FMS. Come have fun!
The middle school years are an important and memorable time for students. The Yearbook Committee captures these moments with a variety of pictures, which include academics, extra-curricular activities, and candid shots.
The group will design the school's yearbook. Our activities include taking photos, online design, and template organization. It is not an every-day activity but includes photo and page assignments.
